HI Everyone,
Greetings from rainy, steamy Appalacia! Yep, we had rain this afternoon and it only made the humidity worse. Most of the morning it was thundering and at times lighting which did hamper activities a bit from site to site. We're spread out from 15 minutes from our center to almost 40 minutes away so the weather varies from site to site. It could be raining and lightning at one site and 10 minutes away beautiful sunshine. Needless to say some of the teams were affected by the weather more than others. Here are some of the updates from the teams.
Hey from American Samoa! Today was a good day for us. We pulled up some more floor boards and got a new door to replace the old door. As we pulled up the boards people were also outside sawing and then it started rainging. It started as a slight drizzle but then changed into a large thunderstorm. Once we decided it was ok to go out we started to put the door on we had a few issues but will deffinetly get it soon. In the end it was a productive day even with the rain we all had a great time pulling up floor boards, sawing, and hanging out in the rain. Well thats all for now we'll blog soon!!- Isabel F.
It started off sunshine and smiles at the Great Basin
work site while we waited for the ASP staff to deliver gravel need for filling our water trench. Our day consisted of hauling the gravel out of the truck bed, loading it into buckets, and hauling the buckets over to pour into the empty treanches. As our day went on however, the sky grew grey and gloomy as a thunderhead quickly formed and poured a much need rain upon our sweaty heads. Inbetween the fastpace and strainous work, we took quick breaks while we talked to the family's husband about life in Appalachia including topics about tornadoes that rip through the vallies, the clash of old world customs with new age technologies, and just plain old family. The time it took us to get home gave us the perfect opportunity to reflect upon our new experiences today as well prepare for the next of excitement. -Mark P.
Hello from Chavies County, Kentucky! Today we completed the task of installing drywall on the bedroom ceiling. We also made huge progess with finishing and waterproofing the roof in the blazing heat. As the day came to an end, thunderstorms crashed our party, especially on the roof. Because of this, we grew much closer to the family, especially the five year old daughter. The highlight of our day was getting to enjoy the delicioius muffins left over from breakfast as our lunch. We look forward putting the finishing touches on the dry wall and completing the work on the roof. Tomorrow will be the picnic with the families and we are very excited to get to know them better and spend time with them before we leave! -Lindsay
Hello from the Capitol Reef work site! These past two days have been painting, painting, painting! We chose a light blue paint for the kitchen and dining room and a light green for the fourteen-year-old girl's room who lives at our site. While the girls painted the three rooms, the guys and I removed an old sink, counter and cabinet and cased and framed two windows and a door. Framing a door is difficult work, considering the effort it takes to make each board the exact length it needs to be and have each board cut at 45-degree angles. We took frequent breaks with our family's four kittens, whom we named: cutie (the cutest out of the bunch; she would fall asleep in your arms!), tiger , achoo (known for his frequent sneezing), and eyeball (who, unfortunately, was attacked and his eye popped out a little bit, causing an infection). They join us every day for lunch! The next day, Wednesday, was very eventful. As we were painting, we fit our family's new kitchen cabinets and fit the plumbing. As we were cutting the hole for the sink in the countertop, we realized the hole was too big and we had to get a new counter top! And the family dog, called "Little Man" entered the house, like he normally does, and came out with paint all over his face and on his eyeball! We dunked him into a bucket, put him under the faucet, and finally soaked him in the bathtub before we could remove the paint. What a day! -Sam
Grand Teton really enjoyed their day today! It started off really hot but we accomplished a lot. The boys worked on some roofing, Reilly and Riley finished the railing and got to know the family a little better. They made us an awesome meal of hot dogs and hamburgers. We all just reaxed and got to know each other. The little girl, Tristin, walked us up the hill to see their hens, roosters, and dog, blackie. Our team has seen a lot of their other dog, Lucky. He is the cutest dog and loves to hang out with us on the work site. Once we reached the afternoon, we were blessed with some rain. It was all we could ask for after the crazy heat that morning. We all finished up the insulation under the house which made us all very excited considering insulation is our least favorite project. We were unfortunate enough to find a massive spider that even freaked out Timmy (Our bug killer). As Timmy was walking out from under the house, Chris (a neighborhood friend of the family who loves to joke around with us) dumped a tarp full of water on him. It ended the day right with some laughs! We look forward to finishing up some new projects tomorrow and attend a picnic with the family!
Big Bend accomplished a lot today! We finished almost all of the underpinning and began working on the deck. After lunch we were relieved when we felt a little drizzle of rain but before we knew it it started downpouring and we were rushing to take cover! Our family was so nice and cooked us supper, so we ate together and had a great time! It makes the experience even more rewarding knowing that we're helping such a great family. Later in the afternoon Doug told us we were going to Dairy Queen to treat ourselves for all of our hardwork! It was a great ending to a great day.
