Leslie County Ky - Monday July 15th

Tonight we will have several teams reporting on our Leslie County Blog. It was a great day overall with a lot of stories in the hallway as people returned from their projects. There are 12 different projects happening at once and stories of rotted walls, floors, mold abound as we start our projects and remove floors and walls. The need is so great here and the local residents are so friendly; it really is a great motivator for everyone. Our ASP staff works really long days with all the planning, material acquisition, site visits, and program planning. They are a great bunch of college students and critical to our success. More about them in a later blog.

The Sprouts

Lunchtime Nap

This is team 1 (called the Sprouts) that consist of Will Mahoney, Jack Duffy, Karaline Black, Ali Peacock and Lucy Leslie (team parents Mary Peplinski and Jim Leffelman).  We arrived at Herman and Laura's house where today we ripped out their kitchen floor.  Laura and Herman are an elder couple that are living on social security and a small pension due to a back injury he suffered working in the coal mines.  While they need the repairs we are doing to their house, they are very proud of the family they have raised and how well kept they have maintained it on their limited budget.  A lot of poverty  occurs in this area and we are very humbled by what we have and that we are able to give.  We are looking forward to the rest of the week.

Team Fang
This is Team Fang: Frank, Bob, Alex, Natalie, Carter and Andrew. We met Stanley our home owner today, who lives in a trailer by himself. Stanley is a disabled carpenter, who suffered a stroke 10 years ago. Today we stained both porches, installed underpinning, and placed vents within the tin siding. We met his dog named Bear who was also excited to see us. Tomorrow, we will finish up underpinning and staining the porches. Also, we will start painting the ceiling inside his mobile home and ripping out the carpet. Stanley is a great guy with tons of amazing qualities. We are looking forward to see the end result.

Team Fairy Lights reporting for duty.  Our awesome group consists of the adults Tom and Megan who lead the fantastic workers who are Becca, Rachel, Kayla, David and Brian.  When we arrived at our work site, we met the kind woman Francis who is an artist!  Along with the site we met the neighborhood dogs: Buttercup, Lady, and... El Tigre.  Our work began right away, as we were tasked with removing the siding and windows from the back of Francis's trailer, which had been previously damaged.  While half of our group removed siding and battled the hornets within the walls outside, the other half measured and cut trimming for the floors that had been fixed by another ASP group in a prior week.  When we come back tomorrow, we will continue with the same fervor that we started with, getting to know Francis through our service while also getting to know ourselves.  Team Fairy Lights OUT!

That's all for today -we're all healthy and our safety training is paying off!

More teams will report tomorrow and please keep us in your thoughts and prayers -
