Hello from everyone in Chavies. Our day started with morning wake up at 7:00, followed by morning prayer and then breakfast at 7:30. Most of the adults were up early getting ready for the day after a quiet evening and a good nights rest. This is the transition day where we figure out our schedules and make our adjustments for the week. After breakfast and morning chores (yes the teens and adults have chores every day) we packed up and headed to our various work sites for everyone to meet the family we're working with and begin our projects.
Last night one adult and one teen from each team went with our ASP contact to meet each family so today was the first time everyone from the teams met their families and saw what types of projects we'll be working on. The following comes from the teens about the families and projects we're working on.
We are team Big Bend and our members are Chris R, Emily D, Justin V, Maddie S, Jason K, Maree S, Doug T,. Today was the first day meeting with the family, which consists of a grandma, grandpa, daughter and her parents. So far we have underpinned the house so animals don't live under there house. We have also dug a trench to help keep rain water awy7bay from the under pinning.
Our team is The Great Basin and the members in group are Gina F, Jack H, Morgan D, Bridget B, Henry B, Mark P, Riley D. Today was our first day on our sight and this is the first week any group from ASP has been there. It will be a year long project due to all the damage water is causing from sliding off the side of the mountain. This week we are digging trenches to help make sure that the water doesn't collect in the house. We almost finished one of the trenches, but we are going to deepen and widen it and we are digging another one closer to the house. The family there is a grandfather, who at this time can't live there due to breathing problems, two little girls the ages of 11 and 12, a mother and boyfriend. They are all very friendly and happy to have us working at their home.
Our team is the Grand Teton and it consists of Reilly B, Riley P, Connor D, Aidan G, and Timmy R. We started our day by driving up these craaaaaazy hills with a very narrow one way road. Once we got there, we met the family. The parents are very kind and welcoming and so are their two kids. Riley loved talking to the little girl, Triston! They were all very interested in the work site and loved to help. We worked on building stairs on a porch, redoing insulation under the house, and digging holes for concrete pillars. We encountered some massive spiders and other creatures (whiskered insects) to which Timmy saved the day and killed them for us. The heat was a bit intense but we had a very successful work day. It paid off with some shaved ice and a Walmart stop at the end of the day. Overall, we all had a great time!
Maiti G, Sam D, Riley B, Lauren M, and Meghan R make up team Capitol Reef. This morning we started the day with a few wrong turns resulting in us being an hour late to our site -- oops! Right when we arrived Tom, Joyce, and their two teen daughters graciously welcomed us into their home. After learning that we are the final team to work on their home (beginning in 2010) we immediately began to clean out their kitchen because our task for the week is to finish their home by painting a few rooms. While the girls on the site began to prime the walls for the paint, the boys worked outside in the blistering, dry heat to attempt a clean up of their yard from all of the previous work groups. After a fun first day, we headed back to the center.
Acadia, an awesome team made up of hardworking individuals, started the day with some problems yet finished the day strong. As we woke and ate breakfast the group met at the truck and was ready for the first impression of the house along with the homeowner. The drive was very quiet as all of us were very sleepy. When we arrived at the site we were given duties from the homeowner. He was cheerful and funny. We were told to put in a new patio and fix the floor with underpinning. We started by removing the old deck which was a success. Then we started digging postal holes for the new deck and we ran into our first problem, the water line. Our team hit the water line with a shovel and out blasted a bunch of water. It resembled a geyser. We quickly ran and turned the water for the house off. Luckily the homeowner was very understanding and nice. We fixed the water line and started fixing the foundation. After lunch the foundation looked great and we made some last finishing touches. We left the site perfect for how we were planning the build for tomorrow. After a first great experience we got in the truck and headed home. What a eventful day!!!
